What Does Medicare Actually Cost? Premiums, Deductibles & More
Medicare isn't free. Understand the premiums, deductibles, copays and coinsurance that make up your total out-of-pocket picture.
Medicare has several cost layers: monthly premiums, annual deductibles, and per-service copays or coinsurance. Your total cost depends on which parts you enroll in and whether you add a Supplement or use Advantage.
Part A is usually premium-free if you or your spouse worked and paid Medicare taxes long enough. Part B has a monthly premium based on your income. Part D and Medicare Advantage premiums vary by plan.
The most important step is understanding your likely out-of-pocket costs for the care you actually use — your doctors and your prescriptions — rather than just comparing advertised premiums.
Costs can change each year. This is general education about how Medicare costs work, not a quote or a guarantee of any plan's price.
